A serious riot occurred at Denver on the night of the 31st, caused, it is stated, by an altercation between a Chinaman and a white man, in which the latter was severely cut.
A mob soon collected and an onslaught was made upon the Chinese quarter, many houses being gutted and their inmates horribly mutilated.
The police being unable to quell the riot, the firemen were called out to give assistance, and a large force of special policemen were enrolled.
At midnight comparative quiet reigned.
One Chinaman was hung and several were badly beaten.
