YREKA, August 11.—This evening at 9:30 o’clock a fire was discovered in the Chinese quarters of the city, which spread rapidly. Two blocks of Chinese stores and rookeries were consumed, together with J. B. Russell’s marble works, Vance & Walbridge’s warehouse and granary, J. Martin’s carriage paint shop, Nehrbass & Harmon’s blacksmith shop, Henry Repp’s blacksmith shop, the residences of W. A. Hovey, Henry Repp, S. Magoffey and J. Morrison and numerous barns. Four blocks in all were burned and the loss will reach $50,000. Five Chinese children perished in the flames. No further loss of life is reported. A change of wind was all that saved the business portion of the town. The Chinamen were sought out in their hiding places and clubbed into work on the engines. At this time, 11:30 o’clock, the fire is under control.
