CHICAGO, March 8.—John Lee, a Chinaman, was set upon by a crowd of boys and drunken white men today in Desplaines street and assaulted with a shower of stones. The Chinaman retaliated and was thrashing a drunken man when John McDonald, a painter, ran out of a neighboring house and felled the Chinaman with a heavy stick. One of the boys then rushed up and deliberately dropped a heavy stone on the head of the prostrate Chinaman. In the nick of time a patrol wagon arrived and dispersed the crowd of nearly 500 persons who had quickly gathered and were shouting, “Kill him! Kill the Chinaman!” Lee’s recovery is doubtful.
