Irate Citizens

Eddy, N. M., July 14.—Wednesday night a Chinaman, charged with criminal assault on a 12‑year‑old girl, was taken hold of by a crowd of citizens, and just as they were placing a noose around the celestial’s neck Sheriff Kemp rescued him and took him to jail. Just a few minutes before the attempted lynching of the Chinaman the citizens had been pursuing a negro charged with beating up a young white boy. They quit the pursuit of the negro to go after the Chinaman. The negro is also in jail. There is still talk of swinging both.
