Is California relapsing into barbarism?
An inoffensive Chinaman walking in San Francisco street, Thursday afternoon, was stoned to death by a gang of boys. ‘Dozens of people,’ the telegraph tells us, ‘witnessed the assault, but did not interfere until the murder was completed, nor was any attempt made to arrest the murderers.’
Simultaneously with the receipt of this news we are informed that at Mendocino, a town on the coast about one hundred and twenty-five miles north of the Golden Gate, a mob has notified all the Chinese to leave within ten days on peril of their lives. If such outrages as these are to be allowed, let us, at least, no longer have the effrontery to roll our eyes in pious horror when the Chinese authorities announce their intention to place restrictions upon the freedom which ‘outside barbarians’ have hitherto been guaranteed in that country.
