CHINAMAN KILLED.—An Inquest was held on Thursday last on the body of a dead Chinaman, by Coroner Colton. The Jury returned a verdict that the deceased came to his death by being shot by A. H. Connelly, Tax Collector, in necessary self defense, on the 27th instant, near Kent’s Ranch. We understand that the Collector, while in the discharge of his duties, was surrounded by thirty or forty Chinamen, armed with picks and shovels, who threatened and attempted injury to his person. Under these circumstances, he discharged his pistol into the crowd, the ball taking effect upon the deceased. If these were the facts in the case, of which there can be but little or no doubt, the Collector acted properly, and would have done so if he had shot a dozen of them. There have been several instances in this County where collectors have been very roughly handled and in fact half killed by the Celestials. A severe lesson occasionally is of great service in managing them.
