Fall 1870 – Near Red Bluff, California: Unnamed Chinese Man Found Hanging After a Theft Accusation
Narrative
The project dataset records a lynching near Red Bluff, Tehama County, occurring sometime in the fall of 1870. An unnamed Chinese man was found hanged, and theft was alleged as the associated accusation. The John Crow Project did not find any newspaper articles documenting this lynching. Regardless, it supports the broader pattern that anti-Chinese lethal violence in rural parts of the American West is poorly documented.
