Tom Wong Was Found Hanging Near the Chinese Mission

Narrative

In July 1885, Tom Wong, a Chinese fisherman and court interpreter in Monterey County, was found dead “hanging to a tree” near the Chinese Mission outside Pacific Grove. San Francisco Chronicle reported that he was “the only Chinese voter in the county,” that he had “apparent scars on his head and face,” and that “the general impression is that he was murdered.” The same article noted that Wong feared he might be harmed because of his work interpreting against other Chinese in court.
